The smart cities drive economic growth along with improvement of quality of lives of people through local area development and harnessing technology. The government of India launched the Smart City Mission (SCM) on 25 June 2015 as a joint effort of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and all state & union territory (UT) governments. 100 cities and towns under different states & UTs were selected for this mission. The mission was aimed to be completed by 2019-2020, but was extended. The selection process began by identifying a large number of cities on the basis of the urban population of the state or UT, as well as the number of statutory towns in them.
More and more people are migrating to urban areas, and this is overcrowding the cities and towns. Smart cities are more livable, inclusive, sustainable, and have thriving economies that offer multiple opportunities to people to pursue their diverse interests. In Smart cities, city planners and residents use data-driven technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI to enhance traffic flows, building design likewise as waste and water systems.
Cities contribute to 63 percent of country's GDP and are expected to lead the revival of Indian economy like never before. This is expected to increase to 70 percent by 2030. Cities are expected to accommodate 60 percent of our population in near future. Some of the basic components of a smart city include integrated command & control center, smart roads & street lighting, smart water systems, security & surveillance systems and many more, which make life easier and comfortable.
